Subject: Reveal MusicStar MIDI Keyboard won t work under Win 98

Reply:

I got mine working under Windows 98se. The solution. The MIDI cable that came with the keyboard is junk. The pins on the keyboard end of the plug are tiny. I went to FRY s and got a MIDI cable for 24.95. It works great. You don t need special drivers, just a sound card that is MIDI enabled. My Soundblaster 16 works good. Please feel free to E-mail me if you need any more details. tomk55 aol.com

Reveal MusicStar keybord now works with all versions of Windows

This is how I got my Reveal Musicstar working in windows 98, 98SE and presumably any other version of Windows. In fact similar procedures should get the keyboard working on any Computer that has support for Midi devices.

Let me explain

This keyboard is a standard MIDI keyboard that requires no drivers at all. Not even in Windows 3. The CD or Floppy disks supplied are only application software. This keyboard will work with any MIDI application software and the software will work with any MIDI keyboard given the appropriate cable for your sound card.

Now to work

The difficulty is getting the game port on the computer set up and talking to Windows as a MIDI port.

Follow the instructions below.

1. In Device Manager DM, look in Sound, Video and Game Controllers SVGC.

2. Ensure that MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device is listed.

3. If it is not install it as follows:

3.1 START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANNEL, ADD NEW HARDWARE.

3.2 Choose to Select from list.

3.3 Select Microsoft

3.4 Select MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device

3.5 Follow the on screen prompts to install the driver.

4. Follow steps 1, 2, 3 above and confirm that there are no conflicts with this device. Your sound card may have come with its own equivalent device but this Microsoft one should work.

5. START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANNEL and double click Multimedia or Sound and Multimedia.

6. Select the MIDI tab or Devices tab.

7. Double click the MIDI DEVICES AND INSTRUMENTS not the in a box

8. Click Properties - add new instrument

9. Select MPU-401 - Select General MIDI Instrument

10. Follow the prompts to install it and any others such as Percussion on Channel 16

Provided the sound card is set up correctly and can play MIDI files MID or RMI all should work. After all the rebooting my one worked fine.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR OLD ISA SOUND CARDS LIKE MY ONE.

The midi port IRQ and address configuration may need to be setup using a DOS configuration program or some commands entered into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file located in the root directory. Check your sound card configuration.

Ensure that the IRQ and ADDRESS S are set to the same values in the Device Manager under Sound, Video and Game Controllers - MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device.

My card is an Aztech Waverider32 with wave-table and it sound great.

P.S. Does anyone know someone who can play.

P.P.S If anyone knows of a better way or can suggest modifications to the above please let me know.

also seeking driver for MPU-401 compatible MIDI device

Hi -

I also need I think this driver to get my Musicstar keyboard to be recognized again by Finale. I don t think it s the cord post 9 as that has been working for both this keyboard and for another midi device. I read post 14 and tried to follow instructions but it asks for the Windows 95 disk, and my disk does not have this driver on it.

Any idea if/where I can download it. Microsoft.com hasn t heard of it.

Thanks.

I don t think it s the cord.

Thanks, I saw that post. Like I said, I don t think it s the cord -- it s been working fine for all applications. Something seems to have been reconfigured since I used the computer to back up midi data from a drum machine.

I tried to follow the 10-step instructions above for getting the computer to talk to the sound card. Oddly the author claims a driver is not neccessary, but his own instructions say in step 3.5 install the driver for the MPU-401 compatible MIDI device. Again, I don t have this or any other driver.

Any ideas where to find it.

Thanks in advance.
